beware! total newbie here!
i am a windows and linux guy, and i am really courious about mac os X. but i really don't want to spend all that money on a new system. i was thinking of an old Imac around 400MHZ. but i want to install a bigger hard drive and probably more ram. i think i can get away with a normal IDE hard drive and PC ram, or am i worng?

Yep, normal IDE harddrive and PC100 SDRAM, just like older PCs had ;)
Depending on which iMac you get, you can up it to 1GB (2x512MB), and I think PC133 SDRAM will work too. They are easier to find nowadays...

Check www.lowendmac.com for specs on Macs.
