Is it possible to add notes in the piano roll/notation edit windows? I can only add notes by playing them live.

You can only add notes through a midi instrument (keyboard) connected to your computer. Otherwise you can find a loop that is highlighted in green (not blue) and than manipulate the notes. You can midi keyboards for really cheap on the internet. After you play a few notes on the midi keyboard you can manipulate the notes.
