I am looking for a way to open up applications without going to the dock, just using my keyboard. For example, how can I open up Safari by just using some quick keyboard shortcuts....do i need to download something in order to do this???

You should download Quicksilver, my favorite OS X app of all time (and I'm not kidding).

Read all about it here: Quicksilver

I honestly can't imagine my workflow without it. Best of all, it is free. :)

Quicksilver download

Another vote for Quicksilver. I rarely open my Applications folder anymore.

If you're on Leopard you could use the above method. I've heard of people not installing Quicksilver after installing Leopard. I just tried it using Tiger and Quicksilver is faster.

i dragged the apps folder into the dock next to the trash can, so when i click on it, its like a grid menu with all the apps, instead of going through the HDD

edit: sorry didnt completely read the post about not going to the dock. quicksilver should do wonders for you.

I just use the default shortcuts, they are fast enough for me, I tried to use quicksilver, it just feels weird to use for me, it's nice.. but I just would rather press Command + Shift + A to get to my apps, I then press the apps letter on the keyboard and it'll open.
