• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

so when i record i notice that there are these flickering mosaic-like bars on the right side of the recording. when i playback the tape it has those same bars, and its very annoying. the sound is perfect and the video is perfect until those show up every couple of seconds- is there a name for this problem?

With the information you provided, it sounds like your camera heads need to be cleaned or you're using a damaged tape.

+1. Run some head cleaner through the cam and use a new tape. should clear everything right up. only problem is whatever is on that tape may be ruined. after you run some tape cleaner through the cam, try playing the tape again and see if it wasn't just some dirty heads.

also, remember to try and stick with one brand of tape as all manufacturers use some different type of lube. ohh and one last thing, you should really only use a tape once (possibly twice). and if you plan to use a tape twice, you may want to record a full tape of black to help with timecode issues (so technically, you would be using the tape 3 times).

you may also want to clean the heads on your deck as much as it could be a problem with your cameras heads it can also be dirty heads on your deck.

also, if the heads on the camera are dirty, the tape and transfer that dirt over so its best if you clean one piece of equipment to clean them all.

I wasn't aware he had a separate deck? well if you do, do like PowerBookG4 said and run the head cleaner through that too. On average, I run head cleaner through anything that touches my tapes every 50 or so hours. You only have to run about 10seconds of head cleaner so.
