I more than often turn off my externals for the night and don't like to have them running for long periods of time during the day. Is it bad to have an external running for a long time, say a few weeks, with little to no shutdown periods? Granted, I'm transferring some stuff, so its constantly writing.

Heat doesn't seem to be a problem. Even with my aluminum case, the chassis only gets luke warm at best.

Thanks

You don't actually have to turn off hard drives as they are designed to withstand long periods of use. As long as you have them well ventilated, you can run them 24/7 for years before developing any problems.
