It's quick look -- are you pressing the spacebar when you have an icon selected?

Yep, you're hitting the space bar when you are in finder. It will give you a "Quick Look" at whatever file or folder you have selected.

try hitting the space bar on one of your pictures in finder
you will then realize why this feature is useful
Tip: you can also click on the 'eye' button on the finder toolbar to activate quick look
