Just recently pulled the trigger on getting a MBP 2.4ghz. I'm still learning to get used to the OS and how things work on an Apple. :)

What are some accessories you guys got when you first purchased your Apple?

Congrats and welcome. We have a Switcher FAQ that you might want to take a look at. In addition, I highly recommend Mac OS X: The Missing Manual, which covers OS X and the iLife suite. That should get you up and running quickly, with a minimal amount of fuss.

Welcome BMW_TT!

In answer to your question, when I got my Mac, I went out right away and got:

1/ An iSight camera - you don't need one since it is built in to your MBP.

2/ Two G-Tech hard drives for backup. My new Mac had a much larger hard drive than my old machine, and I needed larger backup drives.

3/ A Logitech S530 wireless keyboard/mouse combo.

DOH! I forgot to answer the question. Well I got an external 500GB LaCie disk to make my backups. To me, making backups is essential.

Well, I can't remember what accessories I got when I got my first Mac, but I have the following for my current Mac:

Logitech MX Revolution mouse
Western Digital MyBook 1TB (RAID capable)
4x6 Wacom Graphire Tablet

500GB external HDD for backups and I also picked up "Mac OS X Tiger for Unix Geeks". Great book, but useless unless you are an Unix geek like me! ;)

What about USB-Serial intefaces? Does the iMac support these? ie I have some specialised equipment that requires a serial interface.

Excellent question - and one I hope someone knows the answer to because I also occasionally have a need for a serial connection, specifically to interface to Cisco routers.

I have noticed that Keyspan has some USB to Serial adapters that claim to be Mac compatible. What I'm curious about is how the ports are referred to in the Terminal. I'm curious to see if anyone has any experience with one of these things.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

So you guys prefer the Logitech mice over the bluetooth Apple mouse?

I was also thinking about getting one of those shaggymac things to cover my screen when it is closed.

What kind of notebook bags do you guys carry?

i have a macbook and i want to get one of those numerical pads because i like typing numbers using that.. still have to get it though.

hooked up my microsoft mouse, mac compatible, with the buttons... love it on mac more than pc. the foolish magnifying button can actually be put to use on my mac (i use it to launch dashboard), the wheel button i use to launch exposé, and if i really wanted to, i can hold control and scroll the wheel to magnify. i don't think i'd like my macbook so much if i didn't have this mouse.

also got a Y-cable to hook it up to my big beefy stereo system. :D

edit:

i use one of those foamy zipper sleeves.. fits only the macbook, then i carry it around in my backpack. i also had an older small computer bag lying around, so i keep whatever i don't need right away in that. the zipper sleeve thing is the best though.

Logitech mice are the way to go IMO. The Mighty Mouse has some issues to put it mildly.

I have not had any problems with the keys touching the screen of my MBP when closed. I wouldn't worry about it, unless you start noticing marks on the screen when it's closed.

I have a Wenger notebook bag that I picked up at Staples. It fits perfecting, is very well thought out in terms of pockets and has held up very well through one year's worth of constant use (daily to work and back). I would recommend you take your MBP into Staples or OfficeMax, etc and test fit with a number of different bags. Since the MBP is so thin, it can be difficult to find something that fits snugly, sight unseen.
