Haven't been posting here for a while so I've been looking around and haven't noticed a thread like this before.

What would be your ultimate band lineup? It can be anyone dead or alive from any genre of music (since there is a wide range of tastes here).

Mine:

Vocals 1: Cam Pipes (3 Inches Of Blood)
Vocals 2: Angela Gossow (Arch Enemy)
Guitar 1: Herman Li (DragonForce)
Guitar 2: Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society/Ozzy Osbourne)
Bass: Steve Harris (Iron Maiden)
Keyboard: Janne Wirman (Children Of Bodom)
Drums: Chris Adler (Lamb Of God)

It would make a very interesting lineup, some kind of heavy melodic death power metal fusion!

i am really dumbfounded that you have overlooked some great classic rock artists.

Lets go with:
Vocals - Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden)
Guitar - Slash (GNR)
Bass - this is a toss up between Geddy Lee (Rush) and Flea (RHCP)
Drums - Neil Peart (Rush)

i mean if we were to include dead people, this list would be way different.

Lead Guitar: Eddie Van Halen (Van Halen)
Guitar Two: Mike Martin (All That Remains)
Drummer: Either Neil Peart (Rush) or Jason Costa (All That Remains)

It would probably sound horrible, but I think these people are the best at what they do.

that's a really tough question. some musicians just really belong with each other, and some really powerful ones that hook up in different combinations have turned out some horribly boring and or bad music (**** yankees or audioslave anyone?)

i don't want to just add any musician i think is stellar to the list...

i guess if i had to jumble some stuff up, i'd go towards the "alt" rock stuff with a line up like this:

vox: courtney taylor (dandy warhols)
guitar/keys: johnny greenwood (radiohead)
guitar: mike van portfleet (lycia)
bass: nate mendel (sunny day real estate / foo fighters)
drums: stephen perkins (jane's addiction)

Well blow me if that isn't about the same as my thoughts here!
Maybe I'd put Les Claypool on Bass though, and replace Petrucci with Vai.

And yes, Herman Li is insane, saw him on Tuesday last - very good indeed.

For a nice piano based band:

Billy Joel (70's Joel): Harmonica, Piano, Vocals
Mobius Barnaby (August Way): Backing vocals, Cello
Mic Fleetwood (Fleetwood Mac): Drums
Alan Rubin (Blues Brothers Band): Trumpet
Tom Malone (Blues Brothers Band): Saxaphone
Russell Javors (Billy Joel's Band): Bass/Rythm/Lead Guitars

And for a dance band, my other favourite type of music:

Jeffrey Jay (Eiffel 65): Vocals
Gabry Ponte (Eiffel 65): DJ/Mixer
Paul Mac (The Dissociatives + solo and DJ and other work): Piano, DJ/Mixer

**********************

And I just can't make up a rock band. Cause to me my favourite rock band is The Living End. And I can't think of any combination that'd out do them.

Put these folks together on a stage, and I'm there.

Danny Thompson
Phil Collins
Billy Joel
Elvis Costello
Leon Redbone
John Martyn
Chrissie Hynde

Ooohh, just imagine the mingling of Martyns' and Hyndes' voices. Gives me the shivers.

But then, think I'd pay good money and travel a long way, if Martyn is ever able to make it to this side of the pond again.

And, yes I know quite a few of these have already played together and quite frequently.
Redbone can't make it, I'm still there.

Reason I put Petrucci instead of Vai is I saw Satriani, Petrucci and Gilbert jam and it was interesting. Would love to hear more. Les would be a great choice also for Bass.

I think a fusion of songWRITERS would be much more important. A lot of the above names are great instrumentalists, but that is hardly what makes the songs what they are!

I have often thought this band would produce some great content:

Vocals: James Taylor & David Crosby
Guitar: David Gilmour
Piano & Vocals: Steve Winwood
Bass: Jaco Pastorious
Drums: Andrew Borger

I agree. That's why I picked 2 in my lineup that can and do (or did) write their own songs and music.

agreed as well, taylor, van portfleet and greenwood tend to write all or a good majority of the music in their respective bands.

good call on marr MHC. he's a legend. have you heard much of johnny marr and the healers (the most recent project i've heard him in)?
