• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

Can I get an adapter that will hookup to the back of my imac I have old 8mm videos that I would like to save to the hard drive or dvd right from the camera but I don't have a clue if it's possible. Any ideas out here?I have an old Sony Handycam it's from the late 80's early 90's.

If you know anyone with a digital 8 camera, that will do it.You can play your tapes with that and it will convert them to digital.

There are plenty of options. The best option would be to run the analog signal through an analog to digital converter. I have a lot of old Hi8 tapes that I had to convert. I used my Canon Elura 100 (a miniDV camera) to convert the signal to digital. The quality was great. After you do that, you can just run the signal to your computer through Firewire.

An example of an analog to digital converter all by itself is something like this: http://www.nextag.com/Plextor-ConvertX-External-Digital-544577796/prices-html

Although it is USB, I am sure you can find a Firewire version. I don't know what the quality will be like, but you could give it a shot.
