Ejecting External Drives on a Mac

I've been told that I have to eject the external drives before shutting down. Is this also required with a restart? I've restarted a few times without ejecting them and its been fine.

i dont have no mac's
no you only need to eject before unplugging the drive....when you shut down or restart it ejects everything for you
