installing os 9

So i got this ibook that someone tried to instal os x on but failed. When I turn on the computer it goes to the os x logo and freezes. I got a copy of os 9.2.2 to install on the computer but i don't really know how. I insert the cd, restard the computer and hold down the c key but it goes directly to the os x logo and freezes. I restarted the computer and held down the option key but the only thing the computer recognizes is the hardrive, not the cd rom. How can i make it detect the cdrom so i can instal os 9?

The OS 9 CD must be a retail version that will boot any model OS 9 Mac or a CD for that specific computer. An OS 9 CD that shipped with an iMac or tower, for instance, won't work.

Hold down the Option key on start up and see if boot from CD comes up.
