When I open a folder with Finder it defaults to showing me thumbnails. Is there a way to have it show the List view by default?

One setting is the Finder's Preferences. "Open new windows in column view" if you prefer that.

Otherwise, open a new window. Get it to look the way you want. Then hit Command+J.
Make sure "All windows" is selected at the top:
attachment.php

Then close that windoid. Then close the Finder window.

Now open a new window as a test. Any luck?

Thanks giuolio. Still doesn't seem to work for me. Or at least it doesn't work consistently. I've found that sometimes it does open in list/column format when the preference is set to open new windows in column view but for most of the time it doesn't. It does work consistently though when I open folders in a new window. Strange.

Could the fact that I tend to click on the folder name (a hangover from nearly 20 years with pcs) to open a folder?. When I click on the right pointing arrow by the side of the folder name it gives me a list/column view irrespective of the Finder preference set (which does rather defeat the point of the preference setting)

Each folder does store its own preferences. Try setting the folder view the way you want it, then close that window. Now re-open it. ?
