I have an external hard drive. I mainly use a Mac, but I'd like to be able to transfer files onto the drive from a Windows system if need be. I.E., if I have files that I need to give to a friend and vice versa.

I've heard that the Macintosh format doesn't allow windows users to write to it, is this true? Does this limit me to Fat32 only?

Correct, Windows PCs will not be able to read or write from Apple HFS+ formatted disks. You will have to use FAT32, you can use NTFS but Macs cannot write to those disks.

Your Mac's Specs
MBP CD 1.83/2ghz/7200 100g + Mini 2ghz C2D 2gb + Mini 1.42ghz G4 + PM 7200/120 + Newton OMP
...or if you don't mind saving a bit of money, you can pick up a copy of MacDrive for your Windows box. It allows you to read and write HFS+ disks.
