I just use my Logitech windows mouse. Works just great and you have the scroll button and right click. Also good control. You don't need to install any software, just plug it in.

To Make an automator workflow to just open up automator from your applications folder. In the search box search for launch and the results should show 'launch application. just drag that to the right hand side.

Next just choose the application from the drop down box.

Lastly just save it as a finder plugin, go to file, save as plugin and choose finder and give it a name. Now to access this workflow just right click and under automator you should see the workflow you just made.

However this workflow will not allow you to make a new document. So if that app is already running then it won't work.

You can just command tab to word, excel if its already open and press command+N or whatever the keyboard shortcut is to open up new documents
