I have all my music on an external hard drive. Now when I used to have my Itunes library on Windows, I would just add the files on Itunes and it would recognize that they were files from another hard drive. But when I click and drag my music folder into the library, Itunes copies it into the Itunes Music folder on my internal hard drive. I don't want two copies of my music. I have my external hd for my media but how can I use Itunes and update my ipod without copying the files?

There's a setting in iTunes > preferences, called "Keep my music folder organised". Uncheck that and it should not make copies...

You could also set iTunes to store its music on your external drive, that way, it copies stuff directly to your external drive and keeps everything organised under Artist > Album.
