How to achieve 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound on imac.

you need an external sound card, or a set of speakers that accept optical inputs.

I believe there are some Logitech and Klipsch sets that have optical inputs. I think pretty much any set of high end computer speakers will support optical audio

No I need this for a music program that uses stereo for speakers and the front speakers channel for headphones.

are these external sound cards expensive? do they simply emulate or are they real surround sound?
