The Garageband on your Macbook is the Basic Free Version. It is also the Home Premium Version. And the Business Version. And the Ultimate Version. (sorry, couldn't resist

You can buy one or more of the Jam Packs form Apple. You could get a MIDI Keyboard for recording. If you want more power, Logic is Apple's professional music program.

THere is no basic free version. The iLife suite is included with your software bundle. It is no different than the version that is sold separately on Apple's store site.
As was pointed out, you can purchase the Jam Packs for additional voices and instrument loops.
