Thanks Mathogre!

Happy Summer Solstice to you as well!

What is the "traditional" way to celebrate a Summer Solstice?

In my opinion, anything that celebrates life is fair game. ^_^

For me it's just knowing the Earth's axis is pointed at one of the two extremes in relation to the Sun. It's also a signal to me of the coming aphelion (or perihelion if we're at the other solstice). They're astronomical "holidays" (equinoxes included) and so probably have less meaning to folks in general. Still, they're a recognition of how the Earth moves in relation to the Sun, and they lead to a recognition of the regularity and simplicity of the universe.

<geekiness>We've been to the Moon, we've put probes on other worlds. I'd like to think that some day humans will visit planets around other stars. We don't have the science to be able to do that, and maybe we never will, but I'd like to think that if it's possible to go to other planets we'll find a way to do it.</geekiness>

I'm going to go home and do a little count-down with my kids. It will be fun, and a great learning opportunity for 'em. Thanks again Math!

No, I've never heard it put that way before either. I knew today was the Summer Solstice and the first day of Summer for us on the top part of the globe. I think this is just a geek thing.

Mud crabs...no not just a Yank thing. Solstice for them meant the longest day of the years, and for us in southern hemisphere, the shortest day of the year. Their summer and our winter.

yeah, i'm with MaDDoG... the druids weren't yanks. ;P

a few of the big holidays started with and ripped off this "old time religion". i think it's even been seriously contended that Jesus couldn't possibly have been born in december (winter solstice).

maybe that'll earn me a smidge more neg rep :D

Thanks, mathogre ~ I was thinking "Happy Summer" earlier today when I looked at the date. Happy Winter, to you aussies (and other southern-half dwellers)!

Are you lobbying for neg, eric??
