So here's the deal: I received a new US Robotics ADSL2 802.11n router as part of USR's beta test program and have been busy setting it up and trying some of it's more advanced features (VPN, port triggering, DynDNS updating etc).
Up until now I've only used my Airport Express and a regular DSL modem.
I got everything set up and configured the Airport express as a wireless client on the new router's wireless network, so I can still stream music.
I remembered manually changing the wireless channel previously, as there was a fair amount of interference from our neighbour's wifi.
So I fire up iStumbler and check the channel he's using and adjust the new router's channel accordingly. Then I fire up iTunes and start streaming a song - uh oh, it's stuttering.
Fine, go into the advanced wifi configuration settings and turn on all performance improving features there - still stuttering.
Spend ages going over different settings, trying the router in a different location, tweaking performance options until finally I give up and shut iStumbler: The music starts playing fine!
It turns out iStumbler probes all wireless networks quite frequently, which causes additional traffic on the airport card. That's what was causing the stuttering all along! Needless to say I smacked myself on the head a bit after realising... but at least everything is now working fine!
