I did a search and can't believe this hasn't been asked (at least that I can see).

Say I've got raw video footage I want to dump to Xvid format so that it's easily accessible by Mac, Windows, and Linux users. Is there an application that does this? Failing that, can OS X export to a highly compressible format that rivals Xvid, but will play fine on Windows and Linux?
