MP4 / AAC

So should I go through and RE-RIP all my music into AAC? I dunno if it is worth it. I ripped Track 1 of Delicate Sound of Thunder and the 11 minute song came out to 11 MB on my iMac with iTunes, and it came out to 16.5 MB on my Win2K box using 192K Ultra High Quality. There is no doubt that I would probably be saving 1/3 of my MP3 space. Now the question is, is AAC really that much better?

It seems there is no loss in quality so it sounds like the file size is the main plus. I say go for it if space is a problem.

Well, I was thinking about getting one of the new iPods. Right now I have 17 gig of MP3's. If if I can cut that down by 1/3 that'll squeeze me into a 15 gigger with some space to grow .

Anybody do any MP3 -> ACC conversions? How did this come out for you. I am doing this right now, and will let ya know how mine come out.

MP3 and AAC. I need to re-rip all my CD's anyways, because when I ripped them in the first place I ripped them to a network drive on a slow machine and ALL OF THEM came out choppy, which of course I didn't notice until after I finished ripping all of them

Yes, if you're going to re-rip your music from MP3 to AAC, it's always better to use the original source if you can. Since both are "lossy" compression schemes, converting from MP3 to AAC will result in a high loss of quality.

AACelerator 1.0.1 claims to be the fastest way to encode files into AAC, however its a $12 shareware app. dont know if its worth that unless it is much faster than iTunes 4 and youre ripping 17 gigs of music

I tried ACCelerator last night. It works fine. I'm not too sure on how much slower it is than iTunes4, but the file size came out a little smaller. One thing I did not like about it, is that it doesn't do ANY tagging, as far as I can tell. Uses shortened filenames, and doesn't have much as far as configurable options. It just converts and thats about it.

iTunes on the other hand does great at tagging, and is pretty fast. If I can just verify for sure that they don't add anything to the files that are copyright related, then I will probably use iTunes. I have read quite a few posts that say that it doesn't. But these are from people that just read the Apple site, and haven't really done any testing.

As far as converting to AAC from either Mac or Windows, there is a very limited selection. I think iTunes is pretty much the only/best way at this point.

Anybody else notice a fading volume in iTunes4? EVERY song I've played so far, the volume fades in and out.

i thought it was my speakers. im glad to know im not the only one, i was about to package them up and ask for a new set. maybe iTunes 4.0.1 should be expected soon?

yeah, Ive noticed that as well... I dont have that volume dealie on.. so mb thats the problem
