Do I really need it? I don't own or use software from the classic OS. Can I just remove the folders?

It is useful for those hacks and things where you need to access invisible files. If you're not into that, then remove it.

I am a UNIX programmer :D. I assume hidden files then are just dot files and maybe Apple added file attributes?
