In the below thread:

http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45939&highlight=smileys

it was suggested that we might get new smileys as part of a face lift for M-F in 2007. Since it is now 2007, I thought I would ask. The current set of smileys are very limiting. It would be great if we could get a nice and large set, like perhaps Skype or Yahoo has - lots of variabilities in the emotions you can convey. The current ones are very limiting.

What's wrong with playing the "guessing game" every time somebody posts one of these?

:yinyang: :blind: :dive: :bone: :eek:neye: :tusks: :biohazard ;)

Kidding of course... I agree, new (understandable) smilies would be GREAT.

Yay, I'm not the only one that doesn't understand these smilies.

I agree the smileys need some major help.. half the time I can't tell if its a smile smiley or a "go pound sand" smiley.

The only smiley I generally use is this one :dive: because it seems the closest to a simple smiley, and ... I am a certified SCUBA diver so I kind of like it anyway! BUT, I sure would like to get better ones deployed!

I agree. We need some that will express feelings such as embarrassed, sorry, happy, dumb, just joking, etc. The current selection doesn't fit many feelings or could be misunderstood.

We'd be better off with just the 11 smiles that come with the default vBulletin package.

Because evryone hates you ... nah, kidding. It's part of the game, sometimes we all have to bear with neg. reps. What did the comment say?

I vote for new ones also. Some that would be more expressive.

"Major help? LOL. They need a FIRE! | ~Bones"

I don't mind negative reps. Its just that most people don't leave a name with negatives.

The only problem I see with changing the smileys is that a lot of them are named. If you get rid of :ninja: then you'll just see ": ninja :" (without the spaces) in old posts wherever that smiley was used.

Good point ToddG - so, we *add* to the existing set? That would work! ...hopefully?

This can be done through the vars.php file, if the board software uses php. I changed the default WordPress smilies in my blog to the ones I wanted to use and simply had to change the name of the file and attribute the same code. For example, the new smilie file name might be, I dunno, biggrin. gif and you attribute the code :D to biggrin.gif
