Sounds like something on Xbox Live's end- are you set up for their servers (I don't know much about Xbox Live)?

Maybe you getting a TCP/IP error from not having a IP address assigned? 99% of the time the DSL\Cable modems are setup to have DHCP assigned. If this is correct you can go under the System menu and the edit setting tab and see if you have a IP address there... Let me know

The Modem by default won't block any in coming or out going ports. When does it get this message? At the Connecting screen or later?

Did you try resetting the modem? (unplug the power for about 30 secs, plug back in). Typically when a modem is wired straight into a device, it records that particular device's mac address (not related to apple), so if you plug your 360 into it after your computer, it won't work properly.

Resetting the modem will usually fix it. Also, make sure your 360 is set to DHCP/automatic settings in the network settings on the system blade.

yes, but the thing is, unless you have a router (assuming you don't, since you haven't mentioned one), you have to plug the modem into the xbox 360, and then back into your computer when you want to surf the net.

My suggestion is get a router if you want to use both simultaniously. That way you can play on Live, and surf the net on your computer at the same time. It's what I do and it works flawlessly, unless Live goes down for maintenance, which is rare.

your connection speed shouldn't make a difference, although I'd suggest a broadband connection for Live (which you already have).

What I'm saying is that, in order for you to use Xbox Live, you need to power off your router, plug it into the x360, wait 30 seconds, plug the modem back in.

That way, the modem can recognize the MacID of the x360 so it can connect properly to live.

You must also do this when plugging the modem back directly into your computer.

Or get a router, set it up so you can be on your computer surfing the net, and playing a game on Live at the same time, that way both devices share your one Internet connection.
