In word processing, you might also want to add NeoOffice. Basically a free alternative to MS Office.

As much as I appreciate the effort and the list, I feel the comments to each application are either unnecessary or too biased. It should be descriptive and not judging. But apart from that, great effort.

Just trying to contribute and help.

Please add "Adium" under chat programs, it speaks AIM/MSN/etc. in one client. It's basically the Mac version of Trillian.

Also, maybe generic-ize the web browser to "Internet Programs" and add Cyberduck? It's a great FTP client.

Great list...

I would add: (Click the names for links to each URL)

MPlayer to the "Media Players".

Quicksilver should be on there somewhere, as to me (and others) it is one of the Must Have apps.

I would add MacTheRipper and HandBrake and make a DVD AND CD Burning programs area.

Shiira should be in the "web Browsers" area.

And I would second the need to have Adium listed in "IM Clients"

Great Job!

Dont really want to add programs that can be easily used for copyright infringement.

Hey.. it's your list... but you should know...
You can use ANYTHING for copyright infringment or other illegal activity...
Safari... easily used for child pornography
MS Word... easily used for plagarism, and the making of False documentation
Toast... easily used to Mass produce bootleg movies and music
Photoshop... easily used to make Fake ID's and counterfeit currency.

You get the point.

The most common use for MacTheRipper and Handbrake are to make back-up of legally owned media... which is NOT illegal.
EDIT: And to get your legally owned movies from your DVD to your iPod.

well i know you have legal rights to anything you produce. I am talking about professional (hollywood produced) dvd's so you can watch them on the ipod. Your not copying them, just transferring them to a different kind of player, which I think is where it gets tricky in the legal sense.
