Every once in a while when I download something that is in the format .sit it has either word of excel as it's default applications and it doesn't work. I don't know if stuffit doesn't open it right or what but I would really appreciate some help understanding what the deal is.

For some odd reason, if you have Office installed, it thinks it's the default program for .sit files when in fact Stuffit should handle it.

Just right click (control click) on the file and select Get Info. In the Open With section, select Stuffit and then hit the Change All button. Now all .sit files will open with Stuffit.
