Great shot. Did you do any editing or did you catch it just like that?

Great shot. Did you do any editing or did you catch it just like that?

The only thing i did was crop the lower half away so it looked better as a standalone picture (The un-cropped version works nicely as a desktop)

I beleive that the photo should come from the camera and composition and not from photoshop work after.

That was shot 3 or 4 from around 15 i took of that one single sunset within the space of a minuite, just trying to get the best one using different angles etc :)

It's a nice shot colour wise, but you should keep experimenting with the cropping. I'd crop out about 20% of the left of the image, moving the sunset into the left third. If you wanted to keep the aspect ratio, you could also crop some from the top.

Hey Zoolook :)

Composition is still my big weak point and i appreciate any comments towards it!
I presume by bringing the sunset into the left third will then bring it into the usual manner of framing a picture based on thirds? usually NOT having the focal point in the middle?

Ill experiment when i get a chance (little busy at the moment) and see what i can come up with!

Thanks again!

Yes exactly - there is a saying in photography which is, you have to learn a rule to know when to break it.

At the moment, there is no focal point of the image - the strongest part are the two dark clouds which have the silver linings (how apt!) and they're strong because of where they are.

Contrast wise though, the left is more interesting that the right (for me anyway) so you could be chopping out the most interesting part. It's always worth playing with - two bits of paper on the screen reveals a lot!

Sunset shots really are very common, but in truth many are actually very poor photographs. People just rely on the gorgeous colours and "wow" factor to make them passable, so you need to give it that special something to catch the eye. At the moment you have great texture and colour contrast, it's a good place to work with. You kept the horizon thin, which is interesting and probably good because the sky has far more going on. Also, your horizon is straight, which believe me, is something many people get wrong.

You have a good eye, keep it up!

I think it's a much better picture. Trees are one of those objects you can place bang in the middle of a picture and get away with it.

This shot will even be more breath taking if you can remove the 10% digital noise present, IMHO.

Sometimes pin sharp sunset and landscape photos look a little surreal, as though they are computer generated. If you were using film, you might consider using ISO 400 or 800 or higher to add a bit of grain and character.
