Receiving your e-mail on iPhone

In order to get my work e-mail on a phone, my IT department is telling me that I need Windows Mobile 5 on whatever device I use. Given that the iPhone runs on OS X, am I completely out of luck if I want to receive my work e-mail on the iPhone?
