First off, I'll admit that I'm an HDDvd guy, but I heard rumors that Apple would release a Macbook Pro with blu-ray disc drive. I know that Apple is on the blu-ray side so I'm assuming that it is true. Just wanted to know if anybody heard the same rumors?

Ok, I guess this thread got a little off subject but the question remains: Has anyone heard of a bluray drive for the Macbook Pro in the future?

You should've seen CES 2007.

Blu-ray dominated the event over HD DVD.

The battle isn't over and i think this year will truely showcase the winner. As ps2 did for the dvd, i believe the ps3 will push blu-ray sales more..

I guess end of 2007 will clearly show who the winner is.. I just can't wait to watch casino royale in true high def beauty!

As for the blu-ray for macbooks? Same rumours i heard. Apple is supporting blu-ray so i assume it will be the standard in future laptops. Blu-ray would be great especially for it's storage capacity. 4GB dvds are nothing anymore.

Haven't toshiba made a drive that can read both, Apple should jump on that, but they were late with DVD burners compared to PC, so they'll be planning something before the end of the year I guess

NEC has. Even if they have drives that do both compnaies will choose one.
I thin the mac pro will have a bluray before the macbook pro.

Don't forget, Apple is part of the Blue-Ray group. I've heard some rumors that the newer Macs Super Drives are Blue-Ray capable, but lack the OSX software to enable it.

It looks like the Mac Pro's can now be equipped with Blu Ray DVD burners.

LG is making one, a combo blu-ray and HD DVD player.. but it costs nearly $2000

I doubt apple will choose to do both, the price would be so much..and customers won't be willing to spend that much when down the line only one format will be supported.

In my opinion, there is no need to go next gen for laptops in my opinion. DVD isn't going to die out soon

Blu-Ray is going to be the future, and I think the PS3 has a lot to do with it. The PS3 is a steal considering the Blu-Ray player built-in, besides, people aren't going to want to buy a separate player for another format (HDDVD) when they can already play Blu-Ray. It'd be nice to see them come out on the MacBooks and the MBP's, but I don't expect that until the next major update to the line.

Mark my words, BR will fail miserably. There is a huge lack of support from movie studios that aren't owned by sony. Not to mention that sony is the be-all and end all for approval to use thier technology, for example, they've banned all porn studios from releasing thier smut on BR. That dosnt seem terribly important but porn is a multi billion dollar industry, and to snub certain industries based on thier morals is economic suicide.

I dont own either HDDVD or BR so dont call me a fanboy, just look at the market. PS3 is a colossal failure, the Sega Saturn of this decade.

Actually sony denied the claims of a porn ban on blu-ray.

http://uk.gear.ign.com/articles/756/756148p1.html

..Sony is now denying claims of a porn ban in Blu-ray. Speaking to Arstechnica, Marty Gordon, vice-chair of the Blu-ray Disc Association Promotions Committee, stated: "There is not a prohibition against adult content. The BDA welcomes the participation of all companies interested in using and supporting the format, particularly those from the content industry."..

and if you read the coverage of CES2007, every major company was releasing blu-ray products and even using blu-ray to showcase hd technology. It's presence was huge. Dominated HD DVD' presence.. even announced 200gb blu-ray discs!

http://uk.gear.ign.com/articles/756/756307p1.html

and movie companies are backing blu-ray and hd dvd now. releasing movies on both formats. sony does have the advantage of having movies like casino royale, and the spiderman series blu-ray online too.

ps3 wasn't a failure, it just launched and already has sold over 1 million consoles and was only launched recently. By the end of 2007, more exclusive games will be out and more customers would adopt the console. The Fanbase is huge and the games will sell the systems. And you are getting a blu-ray player cheaper than a stand alone blu-ray player.

The war is far from over, and i don't think blu-ray is going down easily..

+1 on the games will sell the systems. The only reason I own a PS2 is to play Gran Turismo. As soon as GT5 comes out, I'll be buying a PS3. Once I own a PS3, I certainly won't be inclined to spend the money for HDDVD.

I own a Xbox 360 HD-DVD add on and have a Toshiba HD-DVD player on order so I hope HD-DVD lasts (I also plan on buying a PS3 when the price drops as a cheap Blu-ray player) but I would rather like Apple leave off the Blu-ray or HD-DVD drive from the MBP as this would increase the price a lot and I am still waiting/saving to buy my first Mac.

I don't plan to watch HD movies on my notebook so from a personal point of view I would like it to stay as the DVD drive (maybe they could increase the speed and add a multi format DVD burner that can do dual layers - if they don't do so already). If that changes in the future I wouldn't mind buying a second drive I could attach via USB.
