I was looking in to this, here is what I found (Studio DV.). (outdated link removed)

I was talking with one of my friends who had gone to the Apple store with the about question. The salesman
suggested buying a digital camera. With that solution, you can do other things. With the Formac solution once
you are finished, you may have hardware you may not use again.

I do it by recording the VHS onto my digital camera, then get it on the computer with the firewire plug.
