Is it really necessary to completely unplug all cords to clean iMac?

Hi. From time to time I will want to take a damp cloth and wipe down my iMac. The manual recommends completely unplugging all cords and plugs before doing this. is this really necessary?

It's purely for safety. You don't have to, but Apple can't be held responsible if you clean your iMac with stuff plugged in and the iMac goes kaputt.

Actually that hardly will happen IMO, but you should be careful. I for one, at least turn the Mac off completely. I know people who apply sopa on a glowing hot iMac screen.

I never do.. the manual just says that to CTA (cover their as*). If you are very anal then it might be a good idea.
