• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

Sony or JVC HDD Camcorder

I've read most of the threads here concerning HDD camcorders and I understand that the mpeg2 is not iMovie compatible without a conversion to mpeg4. That said, I'm intrigued by these HDD cams and I want to purchase a decent unit, just to get my feet we with this burgeoning platform.

The two players I can find in this arena are Sony and JVC. I'm leaning toward the Sony, basically on reputation alone, but the JVC does offer Mac-compatible editing software called Capty. It's unclear if it's included or an extra but it's porbably no where near the quality of iMovie.

Two models for my primary consideration are the Sony DCR-SR60:

and the JVC GZ-MG57:

I value the opinions on these forums as much, if not more, than the numerous tech editors scattered about the net. That said, I would appreciate some feedback if anyone owns either of these two models , or another HDD-based camcorder that they like/dislike. Thank you in advance for your time.

CAREFUL!!! The Capty software is states that is compatible UP TO Mac OS 10.3.9

I am currently experiencing problems not even being able to run the Capty software under 10.4.x. I would not have bought the camera myself -- it was a give...unfortunately.

newbie here. I am using the JVC MG37U HDD camera. I downloaded free software from www.squared5.com called MPEG Streamclip 1.7.

I download my videos from the camera, then drag them into Streamclip. From there I can convert them into numerous formats compatible with iMovie, then edit and send to DVD. I don't even use any of the software that came with the camera.

Hope this helps.

Jerry
