Adobe Illustrator alternatives

I do only minor web design work and I'd love something like Illustrator but I have a new intel macbook and I see the current version doesn't run natively on intel. Are there any good alternatives to Illustrator? I just need something to help me generate some simple but aesthetic button/menu interfaces for an internal website.

Illustrator does run on intel macs, it's just not universal binary (am I right there?) So it definitely will work, but just not as smoothly as it would if it were universal.

I'd try searching under 'vector'. Something like that anyway. You should be able to find some cheap or free alternatives.

I don't know if GIMP supports paths like photoshop does, but it's free and could be worth checking out.
