do certain headphones create problems with ipods

i used an old pair of sony walkman headphones with my ipod and felt a slight sizzle in my ear. the unit contimued to work without problems for another 10 minutes or so and then i stopped using it later in the day when i went to use it, the ipod was frozen and i got the folder icon with an exclamation point. i tried to get it restarted and even tried disk mode but no luck. any thoughts or help would be appreciated.
