Icon cut out question

Hi All

I have question and would much apreciate any help with the matter.

When customizing icons for files and folders within your system (OSX Tiger) is it possible to apply cut outs to the images you're using?
Obviously all the icons for applications are nicely cut out and I just want to achieve the same effect for my customized icons for drives and folders as they appear on my desktop etc.
I've tried using different file types and having photoshop clipping paths but nothing seems to work.

Any thoughts?

Export as a .PNG and use Pixadex to import the icon. Then drag the application you want to change onto your custom icon in Pixadex.
