Is it possible to import a DVD, just as you would a CD using iTunes. If so, what software would this require?

Mac The Ripper, I believe is what you want. It will rip a DVD into a Video_TS file.

If you want to convert the DVD into an .mp4 file you will want to use Handbrake.
