I have a question----if anyone can tell me this, it'll save me a loooooooooot of time and effort.

I used to use windows xp and you can set up things up to type other
languages like chinese/japanese/english. and then just just need to hit
ctrl+space to switch back to english if you were typing chinese, then
hit ctrl+space again to switch back to chinese. This was ultra convinient because I type things half in chinese half in english and my
girlfriend types things half in japanese half in english.

I just can't figure out what the similar hot key for OSX is.
Everytime I need to switch back and forth between two languages, I need
to click that icon on the taskbar.
Anyone know a solution?

if you have the input menu enabled, you can assign a keyboard shortcut for it. Just go into the System Preferences and click on Keyboard and Mouse. Then click on the Keyboard Shortcuts tab. Down towards the bottom is the Input Menu section, click on the arrow to show the options. Now you can click on either one and it will allow you to choose a key combo

The default shortcuts seem to be command+space for next language and command+option+space for previous language.

The only problem is that command+space is occupied by spotlight.

So go to system preferences-> Keyboard & mouse-> keyboard shortcuts and scroll down until you see input menu.

Tick the box in front of input menu to enable the shortcut and enter a new key combo to switch languages.

EDIT:

:) michealstumpf beat me too it ;)
