Members of the Apple Developer Connection, or ADC, are eligible to participate in SoftwareToGo, a new program for software distribution and purchasing at CompUSA stores.

It's an electronic software distribution system by which customers use a touch screen Product Preview Station (PPS) with keyword and platform search options to look for information on types of software products they're seeking. The presentation includes screen shots, video/audio demos, text description, and system requirements. In each CompUSA, there will be two PPS systems, which will have informative signage and an electronic reader board that scrolls titles housed on the system to attract customers.

Once a customer chooses a product, the PPS prints a bar-coded order ticket that the customer uses to pay for the selected product. CompUSA store personnel then use the SoftwareToGo Order Fulfillment Station (OFS) to burn the software title onto a CD, complete with a product specific four-color package cover, title text, its own separate "getting started" sheet, and certificate of authenticity with serial number. The CDs are placed in a DVD-style case, sealed, and delivered on the spot. According to Apple, an average 350MB product takes approximately 3-4 minutes to produce.

The ADC is a developer resource for information, resources, and programs. It's designed to help members develop, test, market, and distribute hardware and software products for Apple technologies. According to Apple, ADC Premier and Select members with software products can take advantage of SoftwareToGo with no up-front costs. More opportunities for Apple developers will be part of the 2003 Worldwide Developers Conference, which will be held May 19-23 in San Jose, Calif.
