Got my lovely new MacBook 2GHz the other day, had it about a week now and been very pleased so far!

I watch a lot of HD content on my standard Windows desktop and due to the size of the macbook would like it to play my HD content as well, it varies from .ts files to .mpg files, but mainly .ts. .mkv files would be a bonus as well!

Now i've tried a mpg of the world cup game and had a little luck playing it in VLC media player, but it still didn't run as smoothly as i'd hoped. Can i get codecs to install on my macbook that will improve performance, or would dual-booting XP using Boot Camp work better?

Thanks for the great site, some really useful info!

Make sure you have the universal binary of VLC, or maybe give MPlayer a whirl...

Universal binary? Would be so kind as to provide me with a link please?

I've got the Mac version, new to the whole 'binary' thing....

With regards to mplayer, tried it for a bit but it just wouldn't play the video, audio was there but no video...

Like i said, both seem to struggle, i've only got 512mb RAM but the processor should be up to it shouldn't it?

A universal binary app is one that has been written for the older PowerPC AND newer intel chip based macs.

If an app isn't UB, then it will run slower on an intel based mac.

Make sure you have the intel release of VLC (it's the second set of downloads on the page)
