Of course it depends on what type of music you're making, but you don't necessarily need a midi keyboard, and you don't need to use the loops, because that's not really making music, in my opinion. If you just put in a new track with a software instrument, which you can edit and add effects to it and get it to sound how you want, you can just use your keyboard (apple + shift + k) and press a note. And then you can open up the track editor/grid and edit the notes (copy and paste for more, etc) and essentially do anything you can do with a keyboard, so it basically works as a sequencer. Then, if you set the zoom level to 1/16 it essentially is a sequencer, and you can basically use it as a 16 step drum machine as well using the same technique. I think a lot of people think you can only use the loops, which would be incredibly limiting, or maybe this is what you all meant, but using this way, you actually have a bit of freedom to create what you want, although of course it's nowhere near as advanced as logic, etc.
