So, I just got a new MacBook Pro to replace my 2 year old MacBook Pro which has basically nothing wrong with it. (sigh... long story)

Basically at one of the very first steps of telling it my username so it can create my home folder, I must have screwed something up because it created a folder using my email address, instead of the name I used on my old Mac. I'm lost. Should I wipe it and start over?

Good morning and welcome.

Let's make sure I've got this right. You have 2 year old Mac and brand new Mac. In the process of transferring data from old to knew, you created a User Name which is applied to your Home Folder and you want to change this?

Options:

1. A name is a name is a name - you could just keep it as it is.

2. You can change the username and Home Folder name to what you want by creating a new Admin User Account and following these instructions:

https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201548
http://osxdaily.com/2016/12/02/change-user-home-folder-mac/

3. You could reformat your new Mac and basically restore it as if new and restart the process all over again.

BTW, are you restoring data to the new Mac from a Time Machine backup or cloning backup? And if so, are you doing this automatically or via Migration Assistant?

Ian as I understand it the OP has a user account which does not have the name it should have. That new account by definition has to be an admin account since it is the only one on the machine. The following procedure should work:

1 Log into the new Mac with the current (wrong) account.
2. Run Migration Assistant and chgoose to restore from another Mac. Select the user account that needs to be restored (desired acco9unt on the old machine).
3. Select any other material that needs to be restored.

The unwanted account on the new machine can either be deleted or kept as a "clean" account for troubleshooting.
