Hi all,
I have an imac Mid 2012 running Sierra. I use an apple magic mouse and an apple wired keyboard. I did some updates from the app store security, one of which was a security update. The other two were for itunes and pages if I remember right. I thought everything had gone OK, but when I went to sign in after the restart, I get the message that it can't find a wireless keyboard! It also said that if I had a usb keyboard that I should check the cable. Even though everything was working perfectly before the update, I checked the cable, swapping the cable into a different socket several times... nothing. If I could get into the computer I could possibly find what's wrong and try to fix it.
Any suggestions?

It doesn't happen often but every once in a while the first reboot after a system software update will go a little haywire. Try simply rebooting the machine to see if that fixes the problem. Before you reboot make sure that the keyboard is firmly connected into a working port. I know you've done that but it never hurts to double check.

Try booting from the recovery partition and use Disk Utility to verify the hard drive. To boot from the recovery partition start the Mac and hold down the Option / Alt key as soon as you hear the startup sound (chime).

If that doesn't solve the problem try using a another keyboard. Even a Windows keyboard should work.

Hi Pete

As a simple first step - often very useful - is to reboot the Mac with the Keyboard attached; even if this means using the Power Off/On button.

Ah, ha; beaten to it by my friend Sly. We are, thankfully, saying much the same thing!

Thanks to both of you for your help. I re booted about 5 times last night but zilch. I read the answers this morning and went in to give it one more try and it worked perfectly.

You're welcome. Glad that seems to have fixed things.

I guess the gremlin responsible for this was asleep.:)

Yes but I rebooted multiple times, gave up and tried next day and it worked.
