Hi,
I have a 27" MAC wireless, using airport extreme.

I've had an external desktop HD for backups, using TM, and I'd like to declutter my desk and have the HD networked.
I only want to use this as an external storage, and also for backup.

I know I could get a NAS for this but, that is way overkill and I'd would rather keep it simple. I have no plans to use NAS features.

Can I hang the HD off the USB port on my Airport router and use it that way?
That may be slow so, any other simple way to network a HD?

Thx

Yes you can, as long as your router-modem provides a working USB port and the router firmware supports it. Routers that have USB ports generally have a setting in their menu options (firmware menu) that may need to be set on in order to support devices such as an external hard drive. Check your router manual.

I used to do this with an Apple Time Capsule. It should work with your Airport router as well. It can be a little slow at times but not as slow as you would think it would be. The initial backup will be slow but subsequent backups should be better. If you can connect the Mac to the Airport by ethernet cable that would help.
