Every computer needs to be backed up regularly. The more important the data is to you the more often the backup needs to be done. Apple includes a backup program called Time Machine on any Mac sold for the last several years. You can find out more about Time Machine here. There are also a number of other programs that can be used.

Unless you want to lose everything on it, yes, your MB needs backup. Use Time Machine with an external hard drive.

As well as using Time Machine, consider making a bootable clone of your hard drive using Carbon Copy Cloner or Superduper. In the event of your Mac's hargrove failing, you will then be able to boot from this clone, something you can't do with Time Machine.
