I use a Macbook Pro with El capitan (10.11.6) and as I am designing a website I have the Macbook linked to an additional larger screen.
When connected I find the Laptop screen in front of me distracting.
Is there a way to blank the laptop screen while using the separate large screen....................or do I just cover it up?

Just a bit of a hint here.... When you operate your MacBook Pro in clamshell mode the screen does not have to be completely closed for it to work. You might want to keep several felt furniture pads between the screen and keyboard to protect again screen marks. Also keep in mind that clamshell mode will not work when the MacBook Pro is on battery.

That sounds a useful tip too, chscag, although I am not sure how the screen would be affected when shut unless the keyboard lit itself. I'll do it for safety anyway, thanks.

It's the small pressure of the keys on the keyboard against the screen that can leave marks. Leaving it cracked open just a fraction of an inch will keep the keys from touching the screen.

Jake, I think I understand, but does that not happen anyway when the lid is closed, or am I missing something?

It's not "suppose" to happen. But the slightest pressure on the top case when in clamshell mode can leave marks on the screen. And... that is not covered by normal Apple Care. Trust me, I ran my MacBook for 3 years in clamshell mode here in my home office. Also not mentioned above, leaving the screen slightly open will allow for better cooling. ;)

The difference between the lid closed and the machine off and lid closed and the machine in clamshell mode is heat. Heat can build up and soften the screen which can make leaving makes with the keys easier. When Apple ships the MBP, there is a very thin film of spongy plastic between the screen and the keys. If Apple thinks it is needed, it's needed.
