Evening Macforumland,
Currently I am running High Sierra 10.13.1 on a late 2009 iMac. 2.66 corei5 and 4Gb RAM.
Garageband is at 10.2.0

When using a new pair of bluetooth AKG's with Garageband I experience massive latency (well at least half a second) when using the app as a practice tool. Electric guitar plugged directly into the line input. The resulting output to the bluetooth headphones gives the effect of a slap-back delay rendering monitoring useless and impossible to use.
Just occasionally I experience the same with wired headphones, but this is cured by quitting and relaunching Garageband.
Apple support suggested resetting the NVRAM but this had no effect and I have tried a couple of the internet fixes without any success.

What's the issue and how do I fix it?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to our forums.

Your 2009 iMac may be limited in that it uses an older version of Bluetooth and you only have 4 GB of memory installed. More memory won't help with the latency problem but should speed things up somewhat. Other than that, I don't know what else you can do. Perhaps someone else will have some suggestions for you.

Maybe these oldie suggestions could help:

And you may want to check out some other hits from these:

PS: Personally I sure wouldn't have gone to High Sierra with that Mac, and especially when or if using an app like GarageBand but maybe they can get along OK together.

And not forgetting comments such as this, especially with older BT versions and hardware:
Audio over Bluetooth is slow, it needs to be compressed, encoded to be sent and then uuencoded all on the fly. Wired is the way to go when latency is a issue.

And the Mac's Bluetooth Capabilities by model, if it makes any difference with speed etc.:
