I understand that to utilise this facility iPhone 5c and later are required. Can anybody please tell me which iPhone 5 models apart from the 5c also have this facility.

Here's an Apple link that explains things:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203032

As you can see...there's the statement that an iPhone 5c or later is needed (as you mentioned). The iPhone 5c & iPhone 5s...were launched at the same time (in most areas)...so the iPhone 5c & 5s support WiFi calling. Then iPhone 6's & 7's.

HTH,

Hey Alwyn...

Keep in mind that your carrier has to support WiFi calling or it doesn't matter which iPhone you have. Not all US carriers support WiFi calling but since you're based in the UK, I don't what rules apply there.

Thanks chscag. I should have picked this up before buying a 5s on eBay 'cos my carrier, not surprisingly, doesn't support wifi calling on pay-as-you-go. I suppose the fact that it's an unlocked iPhone won't make any difference?

Try WhatsApp. That supports video calls though I've found sometimes it won't connect for voice.

Three supports wifi calling if you are thinking of changing. Great SIM only packages. (No, I don't work for them!:D)

I may be way out to lunch here, but what about using Skype?? Would it not work???

Skype for iPhone System Requirements:
This version works on iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5C, iPhone 5S and iPod touch 5th Generation.
https://www.skype.com/en/download-skype/skype-for-iphone/system-requirements/

Or the already mentioned WhatsApp, but I'm not familiar with it at all.

EDIT:
Here's a page with some info, including what models and providers support the wi-fi calling:

Using WiFi calling is very different from using Skype. I agree that Skype is a good way to communicate with those friends and relatives that are far away or international, but it has nothing to do with WiFi calling. Sue's suggestion to use WhatsApp is a better solution.

As member "Alwyn" noted, pay as you go plans usually do not include things like WiFi calling. Same here in the US.

Besides being such a restricted use application, it's often been a PITA to use and connect just too many times AFAIC!!!

Thanks Sue,

Since my last post eBay has decided to refund my money as there was 'a problem with the seller's account'. I've contacted Three but at present it won't work where I live although the website says that they will be upgrading in my area on 11 August.

Certainly their PAYG rates are very competitive so I'll check again.

I pay £12 a month for SIM only deal - 2gb data, unlimited texts, 200 minutes calls; includes international roaming. I don't use my landline any longer.

I don't use my landline any longer.

Many folks here in the US who have smart phones have gotten rid of their land lines and use their mobile phones only. We got rid of our land line 5 years ago and haven't missed it one bit. The one drawback to letting go of a land line is in the event of an emergency. Some rural areas of the US do not provide enough information for responding to 911 calls when on a mobile phone. Urban areas are well covered, however.

My broadband is tied in with the phone line and still have the instruments for that reason but have turned ringer off because of nuisance calls.

When I was in Brazil, I used a wifi service on my iPad to call home. I don't remember what it was called, but it wasn't very much. I had not heard of wifi calling on the iPhone. Could I have used that feature? If not, when would be a time to use wifi calling? AT&T supports wifi calling. I have unlimited calls. So, I am not sure I see the point, or I may just not understand the process of when a wifi call would be needed. I'd appreciate the information.

I'd appreciate the information.

Basically, AFAIK and as Apple describes it:
With Wi-Fi Calling, you can place a phone call if you have a Wi-Fi connection in an area with little or no cellular coverage.

(As long as the service is provided by the ISP.)

And also one can "call from your iPad, iPod touch, or Mac".

And also one can "call from your iPad, iPod touch, or Mac".

Note that the option to use your Mac, iPad, or Touch to make calls must be selected on your iPhone in "Phone Settings", "Call on other devices" = On.

And also note... if you turn this option on, your Mac, iPad, or Touch will ring when receiving an incoming call. Very annoying. Not recommended. ;)

All notes noted and good info to know.

Thanks.

Or should that be:
All notes noted and good info to knowt. …???
