Late 2015 iMac 21.5; 3.1 GHz Intel Core i5; 8 GB 1867 MHz DDR3, Mojave.
Running with Sierra, and I get an alert every time email messages get downloaded, whether to Mail or to Outlook.

I could do very nicely without all that bell-ringing. Is there a way to shut off that particular alert?

You can turn off the mail sound in Mail Preferences, General. You also might want to go into "Notifications" in System Preferences and turn on do not disturb.
