Word file did not go to trash?

Hello everyone,

I downloaded a Microsoft Word file off of the internet because I wanted to study the information. I'm not sure if that was a smart thing to do. Perhaps you can advice me. I also downloaded two PDF files off the internet as a means of research.

When I tried to open this Microsoft Word file in MS Word 2016 I got a warning message. As a result I closed MS Word and quickly deleted the file.

However, the MS Word file did not end up in the trash. I don't know where it is. Is this a warning sign? What do you advice?

I am running BitFender for the Mac.

1. Uninstall Bit Defender. What really do you expect it to do when there are no Mac OS X viruses?

2. Install malwarebytes for Mac. Run in Scan mode for safwty sake.

3. Where did you download this file from?

Also, what warning message did you get? Was it from Bit Defender or was it the Word meager about running Macros.

I don't recall the warning message... it was from word.

Well what is right with it? The free program is not recommended nor the $40 a year model either.

Think of it like this. There are no viruses for Mac OS X period. You are downloading data base after data base to search for non existent viruses. AV software companies have taken over the past few years calling adware and malware 'viruses' to scare Mac users into using their resource hogging software.

If you want to keep it fine. Just remember about the resource bit when the Mac slows.

That was probably Microsoft Word's warning asking if you wanted to run a macro that was included with / embedded in the file. There is no real good way to know whether the macro was malicious or not without examining the code. Macros can do very useful things if they come from a trusted source and the code is well done.

Just to help console the OP…

As it seems the Word file was not sent to the Trash using the finder, many other apps and utilities can actually delete a file or folder immediately without it/them ever appearing in the Trashcan.

And as it seems you got some sort of message about the file, that's probably what happened to the file by the app that gave the message. Poof, gone.

If you think it's still on your machine, search via Spotlight. If nothing comes up it's gone.

Or if and when Spotlight (aka Stoplight) can't find it, launch Find Any File.app or EasyFind.app.
