Copying programs from the application folder?

Is it possible to copy a program you have installed in the application folder onto a drive (external) for backup purposes?

Yes. Simply select the apps you want to back up and drag them onto the external hard drive icon. It will copy them by default.

And then I can reinstall them from the backup copy? Say, for example, if I want to reinstall the OS...
